Richard Wagner – Prelude to Act III from Lohengrin
Performed by the New York Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel, conductor.
Recorded during the orchestra’s historic 2008 visit to Pyongyang, North Korea, this performance formed part of the first major visit by U.S. cultural representatives to the country since the Korean War. Staged at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre, the concert became a rare and symbolic moment of cultural exchange, highlighting music’s ability to create connection, unity, and hope across political divides.
The program included the national anthems of North Korea and the United States, along with works by European and American composers including Wagner, Bizet, Bernstein, Dvořák, and Gershwin, before closing with the beloved Korean folk song “Arirang.”
